ALENKA PIRMAN (1964, Ljubljana)
Artist and writer based in Ljubljana. After a brief study of Italian language and history of art at the Faculty of Arts she studied painting at the local Academy of Fine Arts where she graduated in 1989. For some time she has also studied the anthropology of everyday life at the Institutum Studiorum Humanitatis (1996–98). In the 90s she worked as the editor in chief of the Likovne besede and M'zin magazines (1990-93), artistic director of the Škuc Gallery (1990–96), assistant director of the Soros Center for Contemporary Arts – Ljubljana (1997–99) and vice-president of the board of directors of the newly established International Contemporary Arts Network (1998–99). During this period her artistic work has been linked mainly with the self-invented institutions: SK8 Museum (1991–93), RIGUSRS – The Research Institute for Geo Art Statistics of the Republic of Slovenia (1997, with Vuk Ćosić and Irena Woelle), and Domestic Research Institute (1994–98). Arcticae horulae, a work from that period has been included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana. The participation on three independent Humanistic Marathons at the Metelkova City and collaboration with the international artistic collectives Luther Blissett/01.org (1998) and Bughouse (2002–03) are considered to be of utmost importance for her work as well. Since 2000 she works as a freelancer. For SCCA-Ljubljana she has developed and edited two web-based media: Artservis (2001–04) and Evrokultura (2004); since 2006 she collaborates with Ljubljana Digital Media Lab (Ljudmila) on the Festival of Creativity and Free Culture in the context of Creative Commons Slovenia. Currently she also works part-time as a taxi driver for the Rumeni Taxi company and writes columns for the daily Večer. Since 2004 she is (together with Damijan Kracina and Jani Pirnat) the founding member of the Domestic Research Society, which develops self-authorised artistic researches and activities.
